How do you use the licence renewal date calculator?

Choose the approval, type the grant or last renewal date printed on your certificate, and the calculator adds the validity period and counts back the renewal lead time. It shows three dates: when to file, the validity date, and for BIS the last day before the licence expires.

  1. 1
    Pick the approval

Choose from BIS CRS, BIS ISI, BIS FMCS, WPC ETA, TEC MTCTE, BEE, the three EPR registrations, LMPC or IEC. Each row in the calculator links to its renewal guide.

  2. 2
Enter the date on the certificate

Use the grant date, or the date of your last renewal. If your certificate prints a validity date, check the calculator's expiry against it; the printed date wins.

  3. 3
    Read the renewal window

The calculator subtracts each regulator's lead time, for example three months for CRS[2] and 120 days for e-waste EPR[7].

  4. 4
Put the dates in your calendar

Add the filing date and the validity date to your calendar, and check our compliance calendar for fixed yearly deadlines such as annual returns.

How long is each Indian import approval valid?

Validity ranges from one year for a fresh plastic EPR registration to permanent for an IEC. This is the table the calculator uses.

How do you read the dates the calculator gives?

The filing date is the day to submit, not the last safe day. The validity date is when the approval stops covering new goods if it has not been renewed.

For BIS licences the calculator also shows a third date, 90 days after validity. Between validity and that date, BIS may defer the renewal decision if the renewal and late fee arrive; after it, the licence expires[2]. Manakonline applies the same logic automatically: since 1 January 2023 licences past validity are automatically deferred, and those more than 90 days past validity automatically expire[16].

Where the calculator shows "does not expire" (WPC ETA, battery EPR, LMPC, IEC), it lists the yearly duty that replaces renewal instead.

How did the 2026 rules change BIS CRS renewal dates?

Since the amendment of 25 February 2026, a CRS licence is granted for five years and renewed for five, with fees paid every year in advance[1]. Under the 2018 rules it was granted for two years and renewed for two to five[17].

Two things follow. First, a licence granted before the change may still carry a two-year validity date; enter the date on your licence and check the printed validity. Second, the five-year term does not mean you can forget it for five years: if the annual fee and production details are not received by the due date, BIS's suspension, deferment and expiry provisions apply[18].

The CRS renewal guide covers Form VI, and the BIS CRS fee calculator shows the fees.

What happens if you miss a BIS renewal date?

You pay a Rs 5,000 late fee, you cannot mark or dispatch goods after validity, and after 90 days the licence expires.

For CRS, renewal after the validity date costs a Rs 5,000 late fee and must be filed within 90 days or the licence expires[2]. After validity, an unrenewed licensee may not mark or dispatch products with the Standard Mark, including stock in hand[2]. For ISI licences the rule is the same: apply within 90 days with the late fee, no marking or dispatch meanwhile, and marking fee still owed for the whole period[12].

For importers this is the costly part. Goods in transit when a foreign maker's licence lapses cannot be cleared with a valid registration behind them. Check your suppliers' licences with our guide on how to verify a BIS licence.

How do MTCTE and BEE renewals work?

MTCTE renewal is a re-filing at the group fee; BEE renewal is per model and is often overtaken by a change in the star table.

MTCTE. Renew at least two months before expiry. Renewal is granted only if neither the Essential Requirement nor the model has changed, and the renewed certificate runs ten years (or two where applicable)[14]. It costs the administrative fee of the product's group[14]. See MTCTE fees.

BEE. Label permission is granted for three years and renewal is processed within thirty days, with no fee where the star plan is revised or continued[6]. But the model's validity also follows the period notified for the appliance's star table[20]. For example, the refrigerator and ceiling fan tables run from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028[21]. Use whichever date comes first.

When do EPR registrations need renewing?

E-waste and plastic EPR registrations expire; battery EPR does not.

  • E-waste: valid five years, renew on the CPCB portal 120 days before expiry[7]. The renewal fee follows the same target-based slabs as the grant[7].
  • Plastic: a fresh PIBO registration lasts one year and a renewed one three years; apply four months before expiry, with all annual returns filed[8]. The calculator counts four months as 120 days, so treat its date as approximate by a day or two.
  • Batteries: the registration certificate is valid until cancelled or withdrawn[9], but Form 1(C) is due by 30 June every year[9].

Renewal is not your only EPR date. Returns fall due every quarter and year; see EPR annual returns.

Which approvals never expire, and what replaces renewal?

WPC ETA, battery EPR, LMPC and IEC have no expiry date, but three of them carry a yearly duty that works like a renewal.

Approvals without an expiry date
ApprovalValidityYearly duty instead
WPC ETALifetime of the model[4]None; a new model needs a new ETA
Battery EPRUntil cancelled[9]Form 1(C) by 30 June[9]
LMPC registrationUntil cancelled[10]Annual portal update of address, products, quantities and origin[10]
IECPermanent[15]Online update every April to June, even if nothing changed[11]

What happens if you do not update your IEC each year?

Your IEC is de-activated, and you cannot clear imports until you update it. An IEC must be updated online every year between April and June, and if nothing changed you must still confirm that[11]. The update is free[22].

An IEC that is not updated is de-activated and re-activated once updated[11]. Separately, any change in constitution, address or bank details must be updated within 30 days[15]. The calculator shows the next 30 June for any IEC so you can plan the update on the DGFT portal.

Worked example: a CRS licence granted on 1 April 2026

Enter BIS CRS and 1 April 2026. The calculator shows validity on 31 March 2031, five years on[1], and a filing date three months earlier, around 31 December 2030[2]. It also shows 29 June 2031 as the day the licence would expire if not renewed, 90 days after validity[2].

It also reminds you that the annual licence fee of Rs 1,000[23] is paid every year in advance, so the first real date is the next annual payment, not 2030.

Worked example: one importer, five approvals

A Wi-Fi router importer got its approvals on these dates. Here is what the calculator shows for each.

When should you ask us instead of relying on the calculator?

The calculator does simple date arithmetic from the validity rules. Ask us through the free compliance check when:

  • Your licence was granted before February 2026. It may carry a two-year validity under the 2018 rules[17]. Your printed date wins.
  • The licence is suspended. CRS licences under suspension expire if the suspension is not revoked within 180 days[2].
  • The standard is changing. CRS licences can be renewed under IS 13252 (Part 1) or IS 616 only up to 1 November 2028[24]; after that, renewal means migrating to IS/IEC 62368-1.
  • You hold many licences across suppliers. We track dates for importers; see our services or the BIS consultants guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a BIS CRS registration valid in 2026?

Under the amendment of 25 February 2026, a CRS licence is granted for five years and renewed for five, with fees paid annually in advance[1]. Licences granted under the 2018 rules started at two years[17], so check your printed validity date.

How early should I apply to renew a BIS CRS licence?

Three months before the validity date. BIS says the Form VI renewal should preferably be made then, and the Scheme-II rules require application before three months of expiry[2].

Can I renew a BIS licence after it expires?

Within 90 days of the validity date, yes, with a Rs 5,000 late fee[2]. After 90 days the licence expires and you need a fresh grant[2]. You cannot mark or dispatch goods in between[2].

Does WPC ETA need renewal?

No. An ETA is valid for the lifetime of the model unless the WPC Wing revokes it[4]. A new or changed model needs its own ETA at Rs 10,000[4].

How long is an MTCTE certificate valid?

A regular MTCTE certificate is normally valid for ten years and a provisional one for two[5]. Renew at least two months before expiry[14].

When does an e-waste EPR registration expire?

Five years from issue, and you must apply for renewal on the CPCB portal 120 days before expiry[7]. The renewal fee follows the same slabs as the original grant[7].

Does a plastic EPR registration need renewing every year?

A fresh PIBO registration lasts one year; after renewal it lasts three years. Apply four months before expiry, with all annual returns filed[8].

Does LMPC registration expire?

Not any more. From 29 May 2026, LMPC registration certificates remain valid until cancelled[10]. A 2026 proviso still requires companies and firms to update their details on the portal every year[10].

Does an IEC need renewal?

No, an IEC is permanent unless suspended or cancelled[15]. You must update it online every year between April and June, at no charge[22], or it is de-activated[11].

How long is a BEE star label permission valid?

Three years per model[6]. The appliance's star-rating table can end earlier; refrigerator and ceiling fan tables, for example, run to 31 December 2028[21].

Is the renewal date calculator free?

Yes, it is free and needs no sign-up. It does not store your dates; add them to your own calendar, or ask us to track them.
