What does the approval checker tell you?
The approval checker lists every approval a product needs: BIS CRS or ISI, WPC ETA, TEC MTCTE, BEE, the three EPR regimes and LMPC. It covers 20 common electronics and nine approvals.
The answers come from the same rules our product guides cite. For example, the BIS CRS licence is held by the manufacturer for each factory, not by the importer[9]; extension boards need the ISI mark under IS 1293 from 1 June 2022[10]; Wi-Fi access points and CPE have needed MTCTE since 1 January 2024[11]. For EPR, anyone who offers imported EEE for sale is a producer[12], and importing equipment with a battery makes you a battery producer[13].
Use it first, then open the product guide for the HS code, the standard and where shipments get stuck. The checker does not replace a ruling for a borderline product; for those, read does my product need BIS?.
How does the BIS CRS fee calculator work?
The BIS CRS fee calculator adds up the government fees BIS publishes for one CRS application: the application fee, the processing fee and any extra test reports, plus annual licence fees. It does not include lab testing or consultant charges.
The inputs map straight to BIS's fee table on crsbis.in, dated 4 June 2018[1]:
| Fee | Amount | When it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | Rs 1,000[1] | Once per application |
| Processing fee | Rs 50,000 including one test report[1] | Once per application |
| Additional test report | Rs 20,000 each[1] | For each extra report, such as a second series |
| Annual licence fee | Rs 1,000 a year[1] | Paid annually, in advance, under the 2026 rules[14] |
| Inclusion of models | Rs 30,000 including one test report[1] | When adding models later |
| GST | On every amount[1] | Added to each line |
What does a typical CRS fee calculation look like?
One application with two test reports comes to Rs 71,000 in BIS fees before GST: Rs 1,000 application, Rs 50,000 processing with the first report, and Rs 20,000 for the second. Add Rs 1,000 a year in licence fees.
Why two reports? Under the series guidelines, BIS samples one model per 10 in a series, choosing the worst case[15], so a wide range can need more than one report. Lab charges sit on top: BIS's LIMS lists Rs 25,000 to Rs 2,00,000 for IS 13252 (Part 1) testing[16]. Compare labs in BIS CRS test labs and see the full picture in BIS CRS registration cost and BIS certificate cost.
What does the HS code approval finder do?
The HS code approval finder takes an HS code of 2 to 8 digits, such as the one on your invoice or Bill of Entry, and shows which of our covered products fall under it, with each approval marked as needed or depends. It helps when you know the code but not the BIS category.
Two cautions apply. First, BIS coverage follows the product description, not the code alone; the Steel QCO, for instance, says its HS codes are generic and indicative[17]. Second, one code can hold very different products: 85176290 covers smartwatches[18], but other data-transmission machines fall there too. Always confirm the code with your customs broker and read the product guide.
What does the compliance cost estimator include?
The compliance cost estimator totals the official fees for every approval a product needs, not just BIS, for the number of models and years you enter. Approvals with no fixed government fee are flagged, because they depend on volume, state or lab quotes.
The fixed fees it draws on include WPC ETA at Rs 10,000 per model[5], plastic EPR at Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 by tonnage[19], battery EPR at Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 by turnover[20], LMPC at Rs 500[6] and the IEC at Rs 500[21]. Variable costs, such as EPR certificates to meet a 70% e-waste target in 2026-27[12], depend on how much you sell. See all fees in one table on the compliance fees 2026 data page.
How do I check whether a QCO covers my product, and from when?
The QCO deadline checker searches the Quality Control Orders we track by product, material or IS number, and shows each matching order's status (in force, notified, deferred or rescinded) and the date it applies. Read the order's page for later dates that small and micro enterprises often get.
The household appliances QCO is the clearest case: 1 October 2026 for most firms, 1 January 2027 for small and 1 April 2027 for micro enterprises[3]. Importers may also benefit from relief: DPIIT exempted goods shipped before implementation, with the Bill of Entry within 180 days, for 26 orders[22]. BIS lists 30 product entries still waiting for enforcement between 6 November 2026 and 1 May 2027[4]. For the full list, use the QCO tracker and QCO orders in India.
How does the licence renewal date calculator work?
The licence renewal date calculator takes the approval and the date it was granted and returns the expiry date and the days left, with the source of the validity rule. Approvals with no fixed expiry date, such as a WPC ETA that lasts the model's lifetime[5], are shown as not expiring. The renewal rules behind it differ by approval:
| Approval | Validity | When to apply | If you are late |
|---|---|---|---|
| BIS CRS | 5 years[14] | Three months before validity ends[2] | Rs 5,000 late fee; expires 90 days after validity[2] |
| ISI mark | Up to 2 years at first[23] | Before validity ends | Rs 5,000 late fee within 90 days[24] |
| E-waste EPR | 5 years[8] | 120 days before expiry | Selling without valid registration breaks the rules |
| Plastic EPR | 1 year fresh, 3 years renewed[19] | Before expiry | Annual return due 30 June[25] |
| BEE label | 3 years per model[26] | Before the permission lapses | No label without permission[26] |
| TEC MTCTE | 10 years[27] | Before expiry | Stop-sale notice within 7 days[28] |
Why does a missed renewal hurt so much?
Because the Standard Mark cannot be applied, and marked goods cannot be dispatched, after a BIS licence's validity date, even stock already in hand[2]. A suspended CRS licence expires if the suspension is not lifted within 180 days[2].
Put every expiry date in one place. The compliance calendar lists dated filings such as the battery EPR return for FY 2025-26, extended to 30 November 2026[29], and the EPR annual returns page covers every EPR deadline.
What does the label checker check?
The label checker asks what your product is (electronic, CRS-registered, ISI-marked, covered by e-waste rules, battery-powered) and what the label already shows, then lists the mandatory declarations still missing, each with its rule and source.
The main rules it checks:
- BIS CRS mark: the IS number and R-number[7], at least Arial size 6[7], with www.bis.gov.in shown[30]. See CRS labelling.
- ISI mark: the licence number as CM/L-XXXXXXXXXX near the mark[31].
- LMPC declarations: importer name and address[32], month and year of manufacture[6], MRP and unit sale price[32], and consumer care details[6].
- Battery EPR: the EPR registration number, due on labels by 31 March 2025[13], with a barcode or QR option[33].
Work through the product label checklist for print-ready detail.
Which trackers and data pages sit alongside the tools?
Three trackers and two data pages keep dated information in one place: the QCO tracker, the 2026 rules log, the compliance calendar, the QCO orders dataset and the fees dataset. Use them when you need a list rather than an answer for one product.
- QCO tracker: every order by status. Its biggest event was 14 QCOs rescinded on 12 November 2025[34].
- New rules 2026: dated changes, such as 14 amendments to the CRS order up to S.O. 5689(E)[35].
- Compliance calendar: filing and renewal dates.
- QCO orders in India and India compliance fees 2026: sortable datasets.
All data pages are listed in the data hub.
Where do the tools get their numbers?
From the same research files that back every guide, with each figure tied to an official source such as BIS, CPCB, DoT, TEC, BEE, DGFT or a Gazette notification. When a source is a trade report rather than an official page, the tool says so.
An example of how close to source the numbers stay: the CRS fee calculator uses the fee table on crsbis.in dated 4 June 2018[1], because that is still the version BIS publishes, even though the 2026 rules changed validity to five years[14]. How we check facts is set out in the editorial policy.
What can the tools not tell you?
The tools cannot classify a borderline product for you, quote lab or consultant charges, or predict how long an officer will take. They show the rule and the official fee; your product's details decide the rest.
For example, many items, such as earphones, chargers and power banks, are not named in e-waste Schedule I[12], so whether e-waste EPR applies can need CPCB's view. BIS's 20 working days for CRS applies only if documents and product are in order the first time[36]. For those questions, read the guide, compare BIS consultants or ask for a free compliance check.
How should I use the tools for a new product launch?
Use them in order: check approvals, estimate costs, check dates, then check the label before printing.
- 1Check approvals
Run the approval checker or the HS code approval finder.
- 2Estimate fees
Use the BIS CRS fee calculator for BIS and the compliance cost estimator for the rest.
- 3Check dates
Search the product in the QCO deadline checker to see whether an order covers it and from when.
- 4Plan renewals
Once licences are granted, enter them in the licence renewal date calculator.
- 5Check the label
Run the label checker before printing packs, then follow the Amazon listing checklist if you sell online.
Frequently asked questions
Are the tools free?
Yes. All seven tools are free and need no sign-up. They use the same cited facts as our guides.
Does the fee calculator include GST?
It lists fees before GST and notes that GST is charged on every BIS amount[1].
Does the BIS fee calculator include lab charges?
No. Labs set their own charges; for IS 13252 (Part 1) BIS's LIMS shows Rs 25,000 to Rs 2,00,000[16]. The calculator covers BIS's own fees only.
How accurate is the approval checker?
It applies the rules our product guides cite, such as the manufacturer holding the CRS licence[9]. Borderline products need a written answer from the regulator.
When should I renew a BIS CRS licence?
Which QCOs start next?
BIS lists 30 product entries due between 6 November 2026 and 1 May 2027[4]. The QCO deadline checker and tracker show each date.
What must a CRS label show?
Can the HS code finder tell me if BIS applies?
It shows the products we cover under a code, but BIS coverage follows the product description; codes in orders can be indicative only[17]. Confirm with the product guide.
